Stupid hurricane

This has so not been the August I was expecting when I returned home from Mexico. The Husband started a beautiful kitchen renovation while I was away as a surprise -- that's good! -- but when the contractor took down a wall, he didn't cover anything, so every spoon, every drawer, every cushion and rug and pot and even the inside of the microwave and oven, all were covered with a very fine dust -- that's bad!

Since the clean-up, the renovation has continued in earnest, the basement has flooded, I've had food poisoning, and now we're preparing for a Category 1 hurricane and a possible storm surge up to 15 feet. And don't forget the excitement of the earthquake tremors two days ago that had my house swaying. Is it any wonder that I haven't studied Italian, touched the first draft of my second book, or -- shhhh, don'tell -- finished my NEH Mexico curriculum??!!??

But we're as prepared as we can be for the storm. Mike has been here today, so we worked on fixing the sump pump, gassing up the car and generator, shopping for necessities, getting cash out of the ATM, doing laundry, etc. We should be able to finish up the cement in the basement tomorrow and will then have to start bringing up things I couldn't bear to lose from the basement, bringing in the construction materials, tying down our outdoor furniture, and helping our elderly neighbor get her house and yard ready. By tomorrow night, when a mandatory evacuation will probably be called, we should just about be finished and will just have to wait it out.
